Perlite is what you add when a mix stays wet too long. The particles are rigid and full of air, so they hold open channels that water drains through and roots breathe in, and unlike sand they weigh almost nothing — which matters on a balcony. Roughly one part in four for most containers, more for succulents and cuttings.
