Broccoli is not difficult so much as particular: it wants a long cool season, more root room than most balcony growers give it, and enough nitrogen early to build the frame that carries the head. Sow by early November at the latest — a plant still heading when March warms up will bolt straight past you. Cut the central head and the side shoots keep coming for weeks.
