Marigold earns its place on a vegetable balcony twice over: the roots suppress soil nematodes, and the flowers pull hoverflies and predatory insects in to deal with aphids on everything nearby. Plant a few among the tomatoes and brinjal rather than in a bed of their own. Deadhead constantly and it flowers until the frost.
